The Tides of Change Campaign


The Tides of Change Campaign is based on a Sandbox style of gameplay, meaning that it is almost impossible to lay out what will occur over the course of the multiple episodes involved.  The campaign itself is scheduled to last about 15 episodes.  This means almost nothing, as the true dictators of how many episodes it will take to move to the next campaign are the Players.  That being said, some things to expect in the Tides of Change campaign:
  • The personal stories of the characters may move forward
  • The personal challenges of each character may get resolved or get worse!
  • The characters will make progress in pursuing The Signal.
  • New Eden will open up to the characters, revealing more of its many, many secrets.
  • Characters may discover a recursion gate that will present an option to enter and discover a totally new world.
  • Characters will face moral and philosophical dilemmas that will test their allegiance to their Tides.
  • Characters will continue in their pursuit of exploration and discovery, leading to a deeper understanding of the complex world of trading on Kharak.

The Rules Set for The Tides of Change Campaign is for all intents and purposes The Cypher System from Monte Cook Games.  But as the rules themselves point out: every campaign and every game is unique.  The rules are there to help guide a GM and Players and help to run a fun and exciting game that tells a fantastic story.  Keeping the spirit of that thought in mind, our campaign uses a few things that are different from the Cypher System Rules as Written.  Generally speaking, if you were to take the rules of Numenera, The Strange, Gods of the Fall, Into the Night, Into the Outside, and Torment: Tides of Numenera, and pull out the bits that made the game the most fun for your particular group;  that is exactly what was done for Tides Of Change.  Add to that some optional advanced rules pulled from those systems but tweaked a little to make the game more exciting, and finally sprinkle in other story focused RPG mechanics from other RPG Systems, and you would have what we call 'Cypher System Plus' - our slightly homebrewed ruleset!

Handouts for Character Background Preparation

The following handouts were given to the Players over the 2016 holiday season, when our game effectively shuts down for about 5 weeks a year, to help prepare them for the upcoming 2017 Campaign.  This can give them ideas for overall Character Concepts and for the genre and overall feel of the world they will be a part of in the coming season.
